Get rid of that pesky past

So you did something a few years ago and put pictures up on the internet, but now you’re not so sure you want them there? Well that’s ok, just get rid of that pesky past! There is an article on wired.com about a company called ReputationDefender, you can look at it here. Anyways, it looks like you pay them money and scour the internet for you and remove things that are potentially harmful to you. It’s like 1984 where you just go back and erase any evidence of things that you’ve done. Maybe they can add things for me too!

This is obviously important because a recent study showed that almost one third of hiring managers have used search engines to search for potential employees. Ten percent have looked on social networks sites as well. You don’t want them coming across that wild party picture where you peed your pants… Really, I have seen an alarming number of these pictures before (and none of them of me!), I don’t understand it. It’s like peeing your pants is fun when you’re really drunk or something… Anyways, back to the point. So you don’t want the hiring manager finding all these bad pictures of you. But this makes me wonder what’s so bad about them finding these pictures. I’ll tell you.

I was a hiring manager once for a brief period of time (FuncoLand!!) and I guess I could sum it up by saying I wanted to hire people that were better than myself, and this was only for a videogame store!! I don’t want to see typos on your resume (blogs are an ok hangout for typos by the way). I don’t want a resume that is all crumpled. Don’t stand in front of my store and smoke a cig and then come in and apply. Look good, talk good, act good. But what you do on your own, is your own business, unless I have to deal with it. Sounds like a lot of parents. You can do what you want, as long as I don’t become aware of it. As a hiring manager, do you really care if the new guy goes out on weekends and pees his pants when he is wasted? If it doesn’t affect his work, why should it matter? And if you are using a search engine to snoop around and find this, who’s fault is it?

I leave you with that, whatever that may be.
