After Krakow, Christa and I headed to Budapest, Hungary. I don’t think I actually knew anything about Budapest before we went, that’s right, nothing. In fact, I most likely could not have pointed out Hungary on a map. Now I can though and that’s the important thing. I also found out that Budapest is actually two old cities, Buda and Pest, that combined into one. They sit on either side of the Danube River. Isn’t that amazing?? One of the sides is hilly and green with lots of statues and monuments covering the mountain and the other is straight city.
Budapest was very beautiful, with some amazing buildings but frankly, I think it kinda sucked. I really have no idea why. With all traveling, much of it comes down to your mood at the time. I was very hot and somewhat tired and really didn’t feel like walking around. It was up around 100 degrees but we had nowhere to go yet. So there are some streets in Budapest that I really never want to see again! But then we got to shower and the evening came and everything changed. It was quite cool, we had a great dinner and everything was back to being good. But then the next day, pretty much the same story. I know Budapest was pretty, but I didn’t take a single picture with my camera, weird huh?
Budapest was also supposed to be some great city of romance. Well bring it on I thought!! What this amounted to was a lot of people making out in the park, a lot of people trying to make out in the park, and a lot of people trying to avoid being made out with in the park. And we’re not just talking youngsters here, there were people of all ages out there on the benches. Some of them were quite busy and some were just getting icy stares from the women sitting with them. Romance it wasn’t, at least not my idea of romance. If there were bottles of wine near the makeout benches, then I’d understand….
We did see Harry Potter while we were in Budapest though, that was exciting. It was in English too with Hungarian subtitles. Sadly, that was probably the highlight of this area. I really feel bad that with such an old and historic city, I couldn’t get into it more. Reading their travel brochures, you’d have though that they were the greatest city in the world with shops of every brand of clothing and such. Sadly it wasn’t to be. On to Prague!
