Using Hockey As An Instrument For Change

I’d like to take a minute and post about something that interests and excites me. If I was asked to make a list of things that make me happy and I’d want to continue doing for my foreseeable future, hockey and traveling would be on the top. In fact, I wrote to the New York Islanders’ organization a while back to get more information on a project they were running called Project Hope. Through it, a major NHL organization was helping children in China learn about the sport of hockey and in so doing, were helping them learn more about cooperation, teamwork, discipline and self-reliance. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a response back from the Islanders, but so it goes.

Now it turns out that one of the leaders of that project has set out on his own in an attempt to do the same thing outside of the NHL. Adam Sherlip is trying set up an organization through which children around the world can learn more about hockey and through that, learn a lot of those virtues I stated above. You can find out more about it at the website The Hockey Volunteer or watch the video below.

Although I think it will be a difficult proposition in the beginning, especially with our current economic situation, I have to admit I am somewhat jealous. Adam is obviously following his dreams which is great and all, but more importantly doing a lot of the things that I’d like to do!

His first destination is Kashmir, India. He is trying to raise money to cover his expenses to get over there and provide equipment for some of the kids. I can’t tell you how much I’d like for this to succeed. Having refereed kids’ games, I have been able to see firsthand what a difference hockey can make for children. I hope that other children around the world will be able to experience something like that as well.

Good luck Adam!
