Back from a skiing holiday

not me, doing an inverted aerial

not me, doing an inverted aerial

Took off on Friday and headed up to the mountains! Christa’s friend was in town and the three of us headed up to Copper Mountain on Friday. We had a good day skiing, it was nice to be out on a weekday and not have to battle the crowds on the weekend. The snow was nothing special, but still a lot of fun. We stayed in Frisco overnight and then headed to Winter Park the next morning. Going the opposite direction of all the traffic was fun while it lasted. We got to Winter Park in good time and the snow was a lot better. I had only been to Winter Park once before but I certainly enjoyed it this time. There were about 3 inches of new snow that had fallen over night. We didn’t get first tracks by any stretch, but the mountain was surprisingly not that crowded and so we had some really good runs.

The star of the weekend though was probably the small Italian place in downtown Breckenridge called Giampietro. It was an absolute wonderful place to eat and didn’t cost that much at all. They even had $21 bottles of wine, how can you beat that?! I got some mushroom tortelli (never even heard of that pasta before) and it was exquisite.

Overall it was a wonderful weekend and got me more pumped for skiing. Christa and I both have a day up at Steamboat that we payed for already so we should be heading up there sometime next month I think. Other than the fact that my car wouldn’t really start when I wanted it to (which it has since stopped doing, or rather, started starting again) it was a great weekend ski holiday.

Update: I finally fixed a problem with the Gallery and got the pictures up. You can find them here. The person in the pictures that is neither Christa nor I is Jessica.

    1) You'd only been to Winter Park once before? I could have sworn we'd gone more than that in the early days.

    2) it feels like you're punching me in the soul every time you talk about skiing.
That's ok, I made my choices. Man, I miss skiing though.

    3) There's no(t much) shame in the fact that you still can't do inverted aerials.

I might have been there more than once but it'd be really close to that.
Nothing on the mountain seemed familiar to me at all. But where were more
in the central base area. I think when I was there before I was all the way
    to mountain right.

I think I'd equate the ease of skiing here to the ease of ocean access when
I was in California. I didn't go skiing at all last year, but if I wasn't
able to go skiing because I lived elsewhere, I think I'd feel like you do.
Same thing when I lived a block from the beach. I didn't actually go to the
beach that often, it was just there. But when I moved away, I felt like a
little piece of me was missing.

Ah, the inverted aerials will come, whether on purpose or by accident! I
might have gotten close when I was went down that double black moguls and
lost control. Good thing my skis popped off or I don't know what would've
    happened!

What resort were you mainly going to last year? Have you ever been up to
    Steamboat?

I skied almost exclusively Breck and Vail, with a couple days at A-basin. Plus the Copper four pack.

We went to Steamboat for a weekend a couple years ago, had a place to stay through Sam's brother. The parts that had nice snow were great, and there were some really fun tree runs, but it wasn't huge. The half-pipe was off by itself though, so no excuses.

I broke a bamboo pole with my face that weekend and had a really fat lip. I can still feel the scar from that. The hot springs were pretty cool, some weird naked people but probably worth it anyway. Strawberry springs maybe?
  • Joe
Yeah, I think it's Strawberry Springs. Christa has been there once or twice
I believe. So how exactly did you go about breaking a bamboo pole with your
face? I originally thought you might have done it skiing through some
tress, but then it occurred to me that bamboo doesn't really grow here. It
sounds like you were in a bar fight or something.

I might try the half pipe. I've been trying to ski backwards more on easier
runs. I don't have twin tips though, so it's always a little bit iffy. I
think we did the half pipe before somewhere and I did ok. I didn't try and
do any tricks obviously, but that's probably how I stayed on my skis the
    whole time. Small steps here!

We were traversing at high speed back to the front side after skiing (nay, shredding!) some stuff off the back. Skiing along the ski area boundary, the trail ducked under the out-of-bounds rope and around a tree. Not ducking means you get clothes-lined, yell in shock, and keep moving at high speed while getting rope burns on your neck until you come to a stop when you hit a bamboo pole with your mouth. Pick the shards out of your mouth and get back to shredding.

As bad as I feel for you, I really hope that someone was there to witness
this. You say 'we' so I bet there was someone there. Unless it was your
ego you were skiing with, which would have kept on skiing down the mountain
as you picked yourself up off the ground.

I guess I feel ok making fun of you for this because a) you brought it up
and b) you've seen me excitedly jump off a cornice just to fall on my face.
In fact, you've seen me jump of lots of things and land on my face.

Sounds like it was pretty brutal though if you've got a scar. Busted lip
and a rope burn on your neck. Sounds like something out of 24...

I was the witness and it was not fun at all. I had just narrowly missed the rope barrier myself (my height probably helped me there). Nick had the fattest lip for the next few days. I have a picture of him with the broken bamboo pole but you can't tell how bad his lip is yet.

Did anyone else see? I think that'd really be one of those times where I get myself back up and look around and see if anyone saw me. I remember (as does Nick perhaps) when I tried to do a jump one time under the chair lift... bad idea. I am sure I looked graceful going up into the air, but one of my tips caught when I was landing. Luckily, I was only a foot in the air so it wasn't too bad, but I wiped out right under the lift. Bad news... One plus in helping someone learn how to ski (Christa) is that I can teach her to laugh at all the things that happen under the lift!
  • nick (near denmark)
Ha- I remember that. That and the cries of 'yard sale!' from the lift.

Some guys skied by right afterward and stopped and made a joke, and I thought to myself 'not what I need right now', and then we skied down to the ski patrol hut and disinfected the shard-holes. I think it's maybe better if people actually witness an embarrassing injury, rather than have to try and explain what happened. As long as they don't laugh from the lift.
  • Joe
I usually don't ask someone what happened when they're still bleeding. I
figure it's obvious enough. Now if they're limping slightly and just have a
puffy cheek, then I just gotta ask.

I like ski patrol. I remember when Damhnait got a concussion it was very
comforting to have such a professional group there to help her out. I think
we need a 'hug a ski patrol member' day.

Could this be the longest comment thread on joeflasher.com?
  • Joe
It most definitely is! If you look on the main page, it lists the most
active posts. I think this is number 1! Also, this post is going to
display the nested comments feature as soon as I reply to your previous
comment. But I'm off to a meeting at the moment.
