So I can’t really take any credit for this at all, it actually came to me via a Dinosaur Comic! They’re a great comic strip series introduced to me by the departed (from America) Nick Moeckel. Anyways, today’s comic is about Deinococcus radiodurans which is a bacterium that can stand an incredible amount of radiation. They can take something like 1000x the amount that humans can before they die. So they’re super resistant to radiation, cool. But where’s the story? Well, why are they resistant to such extreme radiation? With no research, I would imagine that this type of radiation hasn’t been seen on the Earth previously. So why would they evolve this? Well perhaps it helps them survive in some other way that’s beneficial evolutionarily…. boring!!

Maybe there was some great event that happened previously (like a Gamma-Ray Burst?!??!) that they had to adapt to in order to survive? Or maybe it was aliens? Aliens are always good. Anyways, like I said, all credit to Dinosaur Comics on this one.

I am off to write a short story about this!
