Movie Review: Up

Up
Without reservations I can say that this was a terrific movie! Up is an animated movie (you can tell this from the previews) about an curmudgeonly old man and an excitable young boy. It isn’t til you watch the movie that you see why the old man is the way he is, it happens pretty early and is pretty sad. This movie made me laugh, it made me cry, it even made me think. In fact, it made me do all of these things more than once.

We watched the movie in Real3D and it certainly added to the movie. There were some ‘gags’ where things come right out of the screen at you, but most of the time, the 3D was done exceptionally well. It was used to set things apart form the foreground and the background and really gave a sense of depth to the whole movie. I know you’re probably thinking, ‘well that’s what 3D does’, but a lot of movies I’ve seen haven’t pulled it off so well. The animation was simply stunning. While I never really forgot I was watching an animated movie, it came close at times. The movie was bright and vibrant, even when it was making me cry!

I guess I don’t really have much else to say (apparently, I need the movie to be crap to write long reviews). This movie was terrific! It’s as good for kids as it is for adults, though I don’t think the two groups will get the same message out of the film. In my estimation, Disney/Pixar has hit it out of the park with Up. The average rating on IMDB right now is 8.9 and I’d certainly agree with that. I give it 4.5/5!

I really can't wait to see this film. I'm hoping it is still in theaters when we make it back to the US in September (when we will have babysitters) but I'm kind of doubting it. Did you search out to see the film in 3D? I kind of hate wearing the dorky glasses but if the movie was made with the intention of showing in 3D, I bet it is worth it. I've only seen “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in 3D and it was obvious they were trying to find things to make it 3D after the fact.

  • Hey Sam!

I think the movie was made for 3D for sure. It was used so well that it never really brought you 'out' of the film. Also, not sure what type of glasses you used before but the standard technology now uses polarizing lenses. This means that they kind of just look like big sunglasses and there is no blue/red component to them. And of course everyone else around you is wearing them so you've got nothing to fear :)

  • Why did you only give it 4.5 stars?

You know I thought about this as well. Really, I guess I am giving it a 4.5 and not a 5 because of the fact that it's animated. That might be unfair, but that's how it goes in Joeland (get used to it!).

If I start with 5 and start taking away for things I didn't like, it gets a 5. If I start with 0 and start my way up, it gets a 4.5. But I have no 4.75 rating, and you know, I am a hardass. ;)

Also, I use wine bottles for the rating system, none of those silly stars!

Up looks like a great movie. This is nothing to due with the fact that I may be a curmudgeonly old man my self, if you listen to my so called friends. :)

I no longer go to theaters, so I will have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Haha, it was a really good movie, hope you like it!

And I can understand not going to movie theaters. They're expensive and
worst of all, there are lots of people there! I hate paying for a movie and
then wondering if I am going to have to scramble for a seat when I walk
    through the doors.
