Moon
Christa and I went down to the big city of Denver today to catch a matinee of the just-opened (locally) science-fiction movie Moon. We went to the Mayan theater which apparently is one of the only remaining theaters done in the Art Deco Mayan style. That’s right, it’s a style, bet you didn’t know. It looks a little like the theater in my hometown, which is a plain old Art Deco style theater. But the Mayan style adds, you guessed it, Mayan looking things. That was quite exciting on its own… now on to the movie!
This was a movie was a solo tour de force for Sam Rockwell. I say that because it makes me sound like a real reviewer. But in all seriousness, the main actor is pretty much the only actor. It really adds to the whole feeling of isolation that they are going for in the movie. He is stuck on a solo mining mission on the moon when things start to go a little weird. Really don’t want to give anything away here, but having only one actor doesn’t really detract from the film. It does have its slow moments, but I believe it’s on purpose as it again adds to the overall feeling of a slow, lonely lifestyle. There is a fair bit of suspense in the movie and quite a few twists. There is also a bit of comedy which came as a pleasant surprise.
Not sure if there will really be any talk of this, but I really really enjoyed Rockwell’s performance in the movie and certainly thinks it’s worthy of an award. Of course no one (especially not anyone important) listens to me. I really liked the plot, loved the acting and was supremely impressed with the way that the movie portrays the grittiness of space. My only small issue is that apparently they came up with some way to simulate gravity in the base but never said how. Oh well, minor detail. I give it a 4/5 and would suggest anyone remotely interested in space porn or character pieces to head out and see it!
