And it got me to thinking, why in the world would you have a bell on your motorcycle? He had it hanging off the back of his bike, attached to his license plate. At first I thought maybe it was so that people could hear him. But there is no way you would be able to hear that tiny little bell over the sound of the motorcycle. So I was a little confused. When I got in to work, I had a chat with my friend Google and he explained everything to me.
For the full story, see here. Apparently, there is a legend, and it’s a little weird. Some guy was riding his bike, crashed and started to get attacked by gremlins (this is a legend mind you). He then started ringing bells which just happened to alert other bikers in the area. And everything being the nice people they are, the bikers chased away the gremlins. Since the nice bikers wouldn’t accept money, the hurt biker gave them some bells to keep them safe in the future. Now mind you, the bells didn’t actually keep the biker safe, it was the other bikers who kept him safe, but sshhh.
And, as the site points out, you can totally by these bells! Really, safety bells just for you! While you may think the magic only works if you give the bell to someone else, you’d be mistaken. You can actually buy a bell for yourself, but the magical powers are reduced (not kidding).
Anyways, this just sounds so silly. But at least now I know where the bell came from. And if anyone is reading this, please don’t get me a bell, I’d feel bad not putting it on my bike. And, to my (as the article calls it) biking brotherhood, if there is any deeper significance to the bell outside of this obvious market shilling, I am sorry.
