So we were flipping through the TV the other night (like good Americans do) and we came upon a movie with Greg Kinnear. So we watched for a couple of minutes. Then the stars just started popping up all over the screen. We saw Wilmer Valderrama, Patricia Arquette, Esai Morales, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Willis, Ethan Hawke, Avril Lavigne… What blockbuster could this be? Well it was Fast Food Nation (IMDb).
This movie looked so much like an after-school special I couldn’t watch it for too long. It just seemed so painful. I had never read the book but I believe it was a non-fiction work. From what I saw, this movie would’ve been better suited to an investigative report rather than a fictional interpretation of the book. Let me give you a couple of lines from the movie.
Uncle: [at bar with niece] You know you’re only allowed to come here with me.
Niece: Whatever, I remember when you used to take me to Mickeys.
Now I thought this had legs. I thought Mickeys was some seedy strip joint that the uncle used to go to. But no. It was McDonald’s!! And the uncle (played by Ethan Hawke) was giving her shit for working there. Seriously? I had to turn it off after that.
I understand that there are lots of problems with fast food places, but I couldn’t watch it any longer. Oh well, if you’re still reading this, I hope you can feel my pain. Go rent the movie and see for yourself!
