Tech slide gone wrong?

I came across this image in an article over at TechCrunch. Look at it, examine it. Is it just my bad recollection or are the dates on this thing off?

Google didn’t even begin until 1998 (maybe 1996 if you think of the very beginning) so I am not sure what it’s doing in 1980.

Oh to be Russian

The Russian hockey team will have finished the 2010 Olympic tournament somewhere between 5th and 8th, their worst placement ever. Not only is it widely speculated that this caused their President Dmitry Medvedev to cancel a trip to the closing ceremonies (unusual for the next host country I believe), but it also caused him to say this (via KK):

Taking into consideration all that happened in Vancouver, we have to change our methods of training drastically. We’ve been living on Soviet resources for a long time, but it’s over now. We do make a huge investment in sport, but money’s not everything. Those responsible for preparing Russian athletes for the Olympics have to make a brave decision and resign. And if they don’t, we’ll help them to do it. But the most important thing now is the preparation for the 2014 Olympics

Just sit back a second and imagine if Obama said something like that about hockey. Ok, maybe hockey isn’t really fair. Suppose he said that after our Olympic basketball team lost (I think to Argentina?). I really wouldn’t want to be anyone involved with Russian hockey right now.

Also, I really hope the NHL allows players in the 2014 Olympics so I can see how these guys respond.

Perrin in the snow

We ran around in the snow a bit today. There is probably about four inches on the ground now with some more supposedly coming tonight. I’m keeping the broom handy so I can wipe off the satellite dish if need be! Can’t be interrupting the hockey games now can we?

2010 Oscar-nominated animated shorts

Christa and I went to CU last night to watch the 2010 Oscar-nominated shorts and honorable mentions. The Oscar nominees were as follows (in no particular order of course).

French Roast
Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty
The Lady and the Reaper
A Matter of Loaf and Death
Logorama

My favorite was Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty. It’s an Irish short which probably swayed my opinion a little bit, but setting that aside, I just thought it was brilliantly funny and was actually short. A Matter of Loaf and Death clocked in at a cool 30 minutes, pushing it a bit for a short (at least in my book). Coming in a strong second was Logorama. It’s a difficult short to describe and I’d say you just have to see it to understand it. But be warned, there is a lot of bad language and such. So if you’re one of my under 14 readers, you probably shouldn’t watch it.

If you happen to be an Oscar voter, please vote for Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, I certainly thought it was the class of the competition.

Here is a pretty cool (yet incredibly scary) look at what the future of augmented reality may look like. This is one of those cases where, if done correctly, I am all about it. But if this is the end product, you have to wonder why were are going this way at all? I don’t know if we’ll get to this point by 2012 and it doesn’t really matter after that anyways, does it?
